Gates of Vienna News Feed 4/5/2011249 women were killed last year in Bangladesh by husbands angry over their wives’ families’ failure to pay the promised dowry. It has become increasingly common for Bangladeshi husbands to set their wives on fire to exact revenge for the shame of not receiving a dowry.

Meanwhile, in Yemen at least 17 people were killed by government forces during the suppression of street protests.

In other news, Moody’s has downgraded Portugal’s bond rating, and the interest on 5-year bonds has risen past the 10% mark. The downgrading of Greece’s bond rating has contributed to the slide of the Greek stock market, which dropped for the sixth day in a row.

Some good news from Japan: workers at the Fukushima nuclear plant have successfully plugged the crack through which highly radioactive water was leaking into the sea.
