Gates of Vienna News Feed 5/9/2011Three Syrian cities are under siege by security forces, and the western quarter of Damascus is said to be surrounded by the army. Mass arrests continue, and Iranian forces are openly assisting their Syrian counterparts as security advisors. However, a spokeswoman for the government says the regime has gained the upper hand, and now has the situation under control.

In other news, Greece is objecting to the downgrading of its debt by Standard & Poor. It maintains that its current financial situation has not worsened, and that the drop from BB- to B is unwarranted.
