I accessed a site a couple of days ago and it said "You have a problem with your Mac please click OK to fix the problem." I was on my iPhone at the time but it does show that someone took the trouble to write a program that identified I was on an Apple operating system.

You're correct. As soon as the new iMacs were released, they were immediately excluded from the free iPod offer. If anyone is hoping that MBP's or MB's are updated to C2D before the 16th so they can get the free iPod from that promotion, it won't happen. If you want the free iPod, you'd better order a MB or MBP before/if they update those systems to C2D. It sucks because I was hoping to take advantage of that promotion when/if the updates happened before the 16th.

Not true at least in the Uk, taken from the t & c's

Did anyone notice that it has an IPS display?
    http://www.apple.com/imac/features.html#displays

I didn't know what IPS was so I looked it up. It is basically what makes LCD usable as a TV.

    In-plane switching (IPS)
In-plane switching is an LCD technology which aligns the liquid crystal cells in a horizontal direction. In this method, the electrical field is applied through each end of the crystal, but this requires two transistors for each pixel instead of the single transistor needed for a standard thin-film transistor (TFT) display. Before LG Enhanced IPS was introduced in the additional transistors resulted in blocking more transmission area, thus requiring a brighter backlight, which consumed more power, and made this type of display less desirable for notebook computers. This newer, lower power technology can be found in the Apple iMac, iPad, and iPhone 4, as well as several Hewlett-Packard EliteBook mobile workstations. Currently Panasonic is using an enhanced version eIPS for their large size LCD-TV products.

    Advanced fringe field switching (AFFS)
Known as fringe field switching (FFS) until 2003,[17] advanced fringe field switching is a technology similar to IPS or S-IPS offering superior performance and colour gamut with high luminosity. AFFS is developed by Hydis Technologies Co.,Ltd, Korea (formally Hyundai Electronics, LCD Task Force).[18]
AFFS-applied notebook applications minimize colour distortion while maintaining its superior wide viewing angle for a professional display. Colour shift and deviation caused by light leakage is corrected by optimizing the white gamut which also enhances white/grey reproduction.
In Hydis Technologies Co.,Ltd licenses AFFS patent to Japan's Hitachi Displays. Hitachi is using AFFS to manufacture high end panels in their product line. In HYDIS also licenses AFFS to Sanyo Epson Imaging Devices Corporation.
Hydis introduced AFFS+ which improved outdoor readability in 2007.

    Vertical alignment (VA)
Vertical alignment displays are a form of LCDs in which the liquid crystal material naturally exists in a vertical state removing the need for extra transistors (as in IPS). When no voltage is applied, the liquid crystal cell remains perpendicular to the substrate creating a black display. When voltage is applied, the liquid crystal cells shift to a horizontal position, parallel to the substrate, allowing light to pass through and create a white display. VA liquid crystal displays provide some of the same advantages as IPS panels.[citation needed]

Yea Sim Free is the only way I'd get an iPhone. No way in hell am I giving up my 7 year old phone number. Sim free, stick in my ancient Virgin Mobile sim card and BAM. We have a winner.

You know you can get your number moved to a new network, you just have to ask.

    To quote Mugatu from Zoolander:

    http://piggington.com/files/images/zoolander-mugatu-crazy-pills.jpg

Really? RA used Apple Dev tools and the App Store folks put up a fight for 3 months. RA didn't break any rules and Apple doesn't have a cohesive process. RA walked away over Apple's policy conflicts, and people are defending Apple. Seriously, this behavior is still continuing at Apple, and it needs to change.

My head hurts, I'm going to go lay down...

Flame me if you must, but what is the sense in having multiple cores if the software running on it doesn't take advantage of it? Same thing with advertising the new chips as being 64 bit. That's great, but I don't have anything (not in beta) that can use it.

Apple themselves have never been great at making use of multiple processors (in tandem), so I'm not getting how 4, 8, 32 cores makes much difference?

According to the Page 2 Rumors there are some significant speed ups to OpenGL in the next update to 10.4 due to multithreading. Apple has had 4 processor systems for over a year now. I would think they have some ideas about how to make use of it.

Things like the next version of iChat... 1 core to run some application, another for the computer to compress that image into a nice stream to be broadcast over the net, and another to do the actual operation of iChat and the OS and whatever else you have in the background at the time.

There are all sorts of stupid (and not so stupid) ways to eat up processor cycles if you have them.

I live in Nevada and honestly the cops spend more time Giving tickets out then doing real police work. Since the state has been financial hardship, The cops are out drumming up business. Honestly, do you think someone who is Drunk is going to be checking the app for the checkpoints? Its just an excuse to get rid of these apps from the store and increase revenue. Apple dont bend to the pressure, These apps do not break any rules for the App store and if you start letting the Government decide what should and shouldnt be, is the day I finally Jailbreak my Iphone.

My God, jailbreak your phone anyway....it's fantastic!

I think the building consensus is that PC gaming is wearing. Intel's graphic chip shouldn't detour many with the much improved CPU to boot. I'm totally happy I skipped the 2010 refresh.

PC gaming corners you into a constant cycle of bleeding your checking account dry; console gaming is infinitely more cost-effective. Once you start to appreciate this dynamic, you'll find yourself upgrading all your toys a lot less often and having money to take vacations and such :)

Yes, this sticky obtrusive and uninstallable piece of junk that constantly plagues people in the PC world (not to mention it radically slows your machine down. I recently installed Flash player on the PC side and without my permission McAffe was installed....ARGGGHH. Now they want to infect the Mac world....PLEASE NO!

Alright. Let's go about it this way, using your own terminology.

How has Apple had success "lining their pockets full of cash."

How has Apple gotten us "hooked on using their products."

Are you suggesting they borrowed Harry Potter's wand and tranced us into purchases, held guns to our heads, or imposed government regulations requiring the purchase of iPod Nanos?

Or - what I believe to be more likely - are you just blathering, "I don't like corporations, and I happen to be on an Apple message board"?

They don't care about us, they just want our money, like any business.

I can't dumb this statement down any further, sorry. Go and have a coffee and calm down.

oh is bono releasing a new album soon?

i read this article that takes a look at bono's charity giving at times it occurs and it seems that every time he does something like this, he is nearing an album release.

but otherwise a very nice contribution to fight against aids.

It's pretty funny that people think that TB is designed to replace USB and therefore competing against it. Saying that is like suggesting that PCIe and DP are competing against USB, because that's what TB is. If your computer doesn't have USB 3.0 and you want it, what do you plug the USB 3.0 controller card into? PCIe of course... how is USB 3.0 competing with the thing it plugs into???

Intel announcing that their future chipsets will support TB and USB 3.0 is great news. It makes a monitor (connected to a computer through a single cable) with a USB 3.0 dock possible and it means all Intel based PCs will ship with TB standard.

TB isn't there to replace USB mice. It's there to provide high speed access to raid arrays, enable universal docking stations with a full array of ports (think USB, eSata, HDMI, audio, etc) connected to a computer through a single cable, and allow laptops to better utilize external graphics cards. The possibilities of extending the PCIe bus outside of the computer are limitless, I can't wait to see what people dream up (especially as speeds ramp up).

USB and TB are largely complimentary. One exception is external hard drives of course and TB is far superior in that aspect (theres a reason raid controllers are plugged into PCIe). Why people are opposed to this is beyond me.

It amazes me how people can't miss an oportunity to slam Apple, U2 and anyone else related.

All I see here is at least somebody somewhere is trying a different angle to help others... is that such a bad thing?

Why not capitalise on a bandwagon product such as the iPod in order to fund something positive?

And those who say yeah yeah donate money directly and get the tax waiver on the donation.. brilliant a great idea but isn't that something that already happens and will continue to happen with or without the iPod.

Oh and how much have those who raised this point donated to this cause?

I really do struggle sometimes to understand some of the sanctimonious comments around here.

All I can say is, kudos to Bono, Apple and anyone else doing anything they can to help people in need.... its more than most of us.
Wish I'd said all that. Great post.

will search and quick scroll be in my ipod's next update?
I've updated the software... games work, quick scroll works... but no search :(... unless I'm just blind and am missing something. Seems like it should be there, since everything else seems to be, right? Any thoughts?

    Hurmph...

Still can't get excited about any of the paid video content on iTMS myself...

I'm still hoping to see 540p files that iTunes "automagically" resizes for proper DVD burning and iPod use, while using the 540p version for users with HDTVs attached to their Macs... Have the video DRM work more like the audio "FairPlay" DRM...

Until then, I'll be happy to download the free episodes that sometimes are offered.. But I'm waiting to pay until Apple provides me with the quality of some of my favorite *FREE* video podcasts.. (MacBreak, TWiT video, DL.TV, CommandN, TikiBar, etc)

What I'd rather see announced, is Core 2 updates to the iMac and and MBP.

Would love to see a mini tower/Cube neo/Mac mini Extreme... Core 2, 4 ram slots, one or two (for SLI/Crossfire) open PCIe slot(s), 3.5" SATA HD.... sigh...

I suspect we'll get ourselves all twisted 'bout this, tune in only to see iPod HiFi v 2.0 instead..

    Shrug.

now is the Xeon processor faster than the core 2 duo?

The Xeon processor used in the Mac Pro is the name for the Core 2 Duo workstation processor. It was originally codenamed "Woodcrest" and is the high-end version of the three Core 2 Duo processors.

    Merom = Core 2 Duo
    Conroe = Core 2 Duo
    Woodcrest = Xeon

it's just like the whole Raoul Moat thing here in the UK, he killed I don't know how many people, injured others, shot a Police Officer in the face with a shotgun, and people still said it was wrong to kill him, SERIOUSLY!

I say well done to the Security Guard, i just hope he is commentated for doing the right thing, and lives the rest of his life peacefully.

Its simple lots of people just have issue with emotions of revenge I for one have not one ounce of issue with it. But then most people have never been a victim of crime so its hard for them to visualize the danger. You pull a gun and point and if I can I will put you down without hesitation but most people will just coward as they get shot.

Kudos to the security guard for probably saving other people lives even if they don't realize it.
