Says a source close to Aishwarya, "Vishal and Aishwarya have a history of misses. "Years ago, she was supposed to do his first directorial venture, Timbucktoo. This year too, she was approached for Saat Khoon Maaf, but she didn't have the dates and the film eventually went to Priyanka Chopra."

The source adds that Bharadwaj was hurt by Ash's constant refusals, but the actress would repeatedly tell friends that she would love to work with him, dates permitting.

"Aishwarya had liked the script for Saat Khoon Maaf. But 2010 has been an especially busy year for her, what with five films releasing. Vishal couldn't wait, and he went to Priyanka Chopra. It happens. Even Prakash Jha's Raajneeti was first offered to Priyanka Chopra.

When she couldn't do it, Katrina got it."

Now at a juncture in her career where she craves unconventional roles, the actress is finally set to work with the director on the project, a contemporary romantic subject with an unusual climax.

Confirming this, Rai-Bachchan said, "Yes, Vishal and I have been meaning to work together for quite some time.

Things are working out now. He feels I've been saying no far too often, but it wasn't my fault. Things finally are falling into place."

Film’s earnings have surpassed all expectations

Director Vishal Bharadwaj's dark thriller "Kaminey" has turned out to be a goldmine, earning about Rs.330 million in its first weekend at the box office.

Produced by UTV Motion Pictures, the fast-paced crime drama, released on Aug 14, has made good business despite the fact that it wasn't released in major cities of Maharashtra the same day due to swine flu scare.

"Kaminey" was released worldwide with 1,200 prints and it hit theatres in Maharashtra on Aug 17.

"The film has surpassed all expectations with the kind of business it did in the first weekend of its release and critical acclaim that it has generated in India and around the world," said Siddharth Roy Kapur, CEO, UTV Motion Pictures.

"The success of 'Kaminey' is testament to what can be achieved when you bring together a visionary director, talented cast and crew, compelling script, great production values, aggressive marketing and sound distribution strategy," added Kapur.

According to a press release from UTV, the movie has already become Bharadwaj's and leading casts' biggest hit ever. It has also been the second biggest opening of the year in India as well as the US and UAE. The film got biggest opening in Pakistan as well as Australia.

As expected, KAMINEY opened to an excellent response, garnering one of the best openings in recent times. Vishal Bhardwaj + Shahid Kapoor + 'Dhan Te Nan' have done the trick. The film is being liked immensely by the youth. The first day collections, excluding Mumbai and Pune, should be huge. Today [15th August] being Independence Day holiday, the business is expected to be superb again.

On the other hand, LIFE PARTNER had a 25% to 30% start across various screens. The film was affected due to the KAMINEY wave, but the business picked up from noon onwards. The 3 p.m. shows showed a jump at several screens and the evening and night shows were even better. The film is being liked by family audiences.

Ever since he made Taare Zameen Par, Aamir Khan is the one person whose approval matters a lot to every director in B-Town.

Soham Shah had a screening of Luck for Aamir, and two nights ago, Vishal Bhardwaj showed him Kaminey. What Aamir thought of their films is, of course, not public knowledge because the actor is very discreet when it comes to discussing other filmmakers’ work. What one hears though is that Vishal and Aamir were locked in conversation for an hour after the screening. Guess that could only mean the actor liked what he saw. Why else would he be wasting his precious time?

While everyone is upset that the release of Kaminey has been postponed in Mumbai due to Swine Flu, no one is bothered about Life Partner.

Keeping our views aside, with the help of celebrity astro-numerologist Bhavikk Sangghvi, we unravel the fate of the two movies.

The title Life Partner adds up to Number 44 (4 + 4 = 8) which is the Number of Saturn (Shani) known to give lots of hardships and struggle in life. The year 2009 which adds up to Number 2 is conversely opposite of that and that is why Numbers 2 and 8 generally do not gel well. In that context, I feel Life Partner may not have a ‘long life’ at the box office,” predicts Bhavikk.

“Similarly, Fardeen Khan is a Number 8 (March 8) while Tusshar Kapoor is a Number 2 (November 20). So in all probability, this ‘jodi’ has very less chances of clicking. Also the film’s anchor Govinda is currently running in his 46th year (4 + 6 = 10 = 1 + 0 = 1) year which is one of his weakest numbers and it seems like Govinda’s comic timing may also not be able to salvage the film beyond a point,” says Bhavikk.

“Numerologically speaking, things do not seem to be much in favour of this Life Partner,” concludes Bhavikk.

Dhan Te Nan, there is a bright side to this story to courtesy the good stars of Kaminey.

“The title Kaminey adds up to Number 19 which represents the Sun – the most powerful star of our solar system. Currently, the Sun is in the zodiac sign of Leo which is also ruled by the Sun. In that case, Kaminey has all the chances of hitting the bull’s eye,” predicts Bhavikk.

“Shahid Kapoor was born on February 25, 1981 and his destiny number also adds up to Number 1. He is in his 29th year (2 + 9 = 1 + 1 = 2) which is one of his strongest numbers. The year 2009 also adds up to Number 2. This is the best phase of his life and Shahid is likely to deliver an award winning performance in this film,” assures Bhavikk with a lot of confidence.

He continues, “Director Vishal Bhardwaj is also a Leo (August 6) ruled by Number 1. The official release of the film may be 14th August but at most places it will be released on 13th August in the form of paid previews. Number 4 and Number 1 go hand in hand. This will further improve the film’s prospects at the box office, Swine Flu notwithstanding.”

“Kaminey has all the trappings to become the Number 1 film of the year!” signs off Sangghvi on a high note.

Kaminey fans have reason to frown as the multiplexes in Mumbai will be shut for three days because of swine flu. Even the Delhi premiere has been cancelled.

A source told, “Kaminey is not releasing this week and will incur a loss of 15 crores almost if it gets postponed. It is only in Mumbai that it is not releasing. Cinema halls will be closed because of the swine flu scare. The producers are very worried because they wanted to cash in on the long weekend as Friday is Gokulashtmi and Saturday is Independence Day. Also, multiplexes were running paid previews on Thursday night. Multiplexes are expected to open on Sunday or Monday.”

The spokesperson of Kaminey said, “Everything is on hold right now because of the multiplexes being shut down. We are not even sure of the press show.”

According to a reliable source from the film, the Delhi premiere has been cancelled and a screening with the cast has been arranged in its place.

When we called up Cinemax, an executive said, “We have no update about tomorrow. We are booking tickets for today and tomorrow’s shows. If the shows get cancelled then the patrons will get their money back.”

Siddharth Roy Kapur, CEO of UTV confirms Kaminey will not release in Mumbai on Friday. "There is immense buzz and anticipation around the release of Kaminey which is clearly one of the most awaited films of the year. There is already a heavy rush for Paid Previews of the film nationwide and in US/ UK & Dubai. We are going ahead with the release of the film this Friday across the country and worldwide in 1200 screens. This will not include the markets of Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai following the directive given by the government. We look forward to release the film in these regions as soon as the cinemas are given permission to re-open. Being a corporate we are fully insured for the 2 day delay we are facing in these markets."

StarBoxOffice is awfully disappointed that Kaminey may not release in Mumbai this week and empathizes with everyone who will have to deal with boredom this weekend.

Dhan Te Nan. Vishal Bhardwaj pays homage to cinema of yore and that's reason enough to go out and grab tickets for one of the most keenly anticipated films of our times.

A few monsoons ago, Farah Khan paid homage to the cinema of 1970s with OM SHANTI OM. Now Bhardwaj picks up characters that we have witnessed on the Hindi screen before, but executes it like Tarantino and Guy Ritchie do. He creates a film that's so different from movies we've witnessed thus far.

Let's say, KAMINEY is bold, stark, funny and unpredictable and that's what works in its favour. There're two more reasons: Shahid Kapoor and of course, 'Dhan Te Nan'. Okay, we've seen Shahid pitching in a sincere act in his earlier films, but KAMINEY should catapult him to superstardom. His double role in KAMINEY is exemplary.

There's another star in KAMINEY and that's 'Dhan Te Nan'. Your heart starts beating faster every time you hear this in the background or also when Shahid breaks into the song. The track is as big a craze as 'Jumma Chumma' [HUM], 'Ek Do Teen' [TEZAAB] and 'Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai' [KHAL-NAYAK] and will contribute enormously in attracting viewers in hordes.

Having said that, I wish to add that KAMINEY is not the usual masala film. Sure, it's a well-made film, but there's no spoon feeding here. One has to be attentive, very attentive to grasp the goings-on and also the twists in the tale. It's not one of those lock-your-brains-at-home types, for sure. And that might not be too appealing a thought for those who swear by candyfloss or meaningless ha-ha-thons.

To cut it short, KAMINEY is a film with an attitude. Like it or leave it, but you'd never be able to ignore it. Word from the wise: Go for this hatke experience!

KAMINEY is about a pair of twin brothers, Charlie and Guddu [Shahid Kapoor]. Charlie lisps, while Guddu stammers. They are as different as chalk and cheese. And they can't stand the sight of each other. Till one fateful rainy night, their lives cross.

Charlie gets mixed up in a deathly get-rich-quick scheme, while Guddu realizes that the love of his life, Sweety [Priyanka Chopra], has unwittingly put a price on his head. The brothers are sucked into a world of drugs, guns and money. Their lives collide head on with the lives of gangsters, rebel soldiers, rogue politicians and crooked cops.

The brothers have to run to protect themselves, their dreams, their love. And most importantly, realize that all they have is each other.

It takes time to get used to the world Vishal Bhardwaj wants us to enter. The characters, the relationships, the lingo, the tone and the setting… frankly, you don't take to KAMINEY instantly. But twenty minutes into the film and things start falling in place. From thereon, you're drawn into a different world completely.

The interval point raises the bar and also the expectations. The story takes a dramatic turn at this juncture, but minutes before that, 'Dhan Te Nan' makes the proceedings exhilarating and stimulating.

Right from the sequence after the interval to the finale, Vishal Bhardwaj peels off layer after layer, which erupts like a volcano towards the end. The end is long drawn and with so many characters in the film, it only takes time to give a culmination to each of those characters. And that gets tedious. The violent end might not find universal acceptance. Vishal Bhardwaj proves that he's a master storyteller. KAMINEY is a damn difficult film to conceptualize and execute and Vishal does it with gusto. Besides the soundtrack ['Dhan Te Nan'], the effectual background score only enhances the impact. The dialogues, also penned by Vishal, are super. At places, clapworthy. Tassaduq Hussain's cinematography is top notch.

Shahid takes a really big leap with KAMINEY. Note how he handles the two characters, Guddu and Charlie, brilliantly. This film is a step to superstardom and also which will open new doors and vistas for him as an actor. Priyanka is first-rate. She's so much in sync with her character. Also, she gets the Maharashtrian accent perfect. Amole Gupte is outstanding. An incredible actor! Tenzing Nima and Chandan Roy Sanyal leave a solid impression. Shiv Subrahmanyam and Hrishikesh Joshi are perfect.

On the whole, KAMINEY lives up to the hype associated with it. The film has three stars -- Vishal Bhardwaj [a name that's immensely respected by moviegoers], Shahid Kapoor and 'Dhan Te Nan' -- and this combo as also the crooked characters and a genuinely hatke subject should guarantee ample footfalls in cineplexes even after its initial weekend. The weekend business should be huge due to the holidays all through the weekend: Friday [Janmashtami], Saturday [Independence Day] and Sunday. Of course, the business is bound to be affected in parts of Mumbai territory due to Swine Flu, but the film should take off in a big way when theatres re-open.

Distributors also positive about the film

After his critically-acclaimed "Omkara", director Vishal Bharadwaj is back with dark drama "Kaminey". Releasing on August 14, this Shahid Kapur-Priyanka Chopra-starrer is all about gangsters, rebel soldiers, rogue politicians and crooked cops.

The initial rushes and songs of the film have already created an unprecedented buzz among audiences and with a healthy round of eleventh hour promotions going on, "Kaminey" has gathered just enough momentum for its release.

With advance bookings having already opened on Sunday instead of a Wednesday, the movie is already heating up the ticket counters in terms of bookings and insiders claim it is going to be the next superhit of the year.

The film revolves around twins - Charlie and Guddu - both played by Shahid. They are as different as chalk and cheese and can't stand the sight of each other till one fateful rainy night their lives cross.

Charlie gets mixed up in a deathly get-rich-quick scheme, while Guddu realises that the love of his life, Sweety, has unwittingly put a price on his head.

It's a dark comic ride thereon and their lives collide with the lives of gangsters, rogue politicians and crooked cops. In the middle of this crazy adventure, the brothers have to run to protect themselves, their dreams, their love.... And most importantly, realise that all they have is each other.

Produced and distributed by UTV Motion Pictures, the film has been written and directed by Bharadwaj. Shahid plays a double role for the first time and it also has writer-director Amol Gupte playing the villain.

Industry sources reveal that the movie is made at a budget of around Rs.35 crore (Rs.350 million) and is releasing worldwide with around 1,100 prints and an 'A' certificate.

"'Kaminey' is an important film for me as I have tried many new things in it. For the first time I am playing a double role and I'm trying something different from a love story. In fact, this is also the first commercial film of Vishal Bharadwaj," said Shahid.

Distributors are also positive about the film.

"'Kaminey' is going to be a super-duper hit. The songs are already a hit and like every UTV venture, the promotions are in full progress. Moreover, the unique plot and Shahid's double role has already created curiosity among the masses," said a Delhi-based distributor.

"The biggest factor for the movie will be that it is releasing on the weekend of Aug 15, which will draw footfalls in hordes, as everyone will be having a holiday over the weekend," he added.

"There is a big buzz for the movie and we have already started receiving a very good advance booking buzz... Independence Day holidays will favour the movie, bringing in a tremendous initial and a very good business," said Amit Awasthi, manager (programming and operations) of Spice Cinemas, Noida.

"Kaminey" is Shahid's first outing in 2009 after last year's dud "Kismet Konnection" and Priyanka's first full-fledged role after a cameo in Shah Rukh Khan-starrer "Billu". The movie is also Bharadwaj's first venture three years after "Omkara".
