A balanced mix of artistic expressions like music, dance, comedy and Bollywood featured at the 12th Rajiv Gandhi Awards ’09.

Yes, there was glamour, glory, sound and fury... but underpinning this magnificent ceremony was a certain gravitas, a sense of purpose and substance running through it all. And why substance? Well, simply because these awards keep alive the stellar values that Rajiv Gandhi embodied. In an event that blended the celebration of achievement beautifully with respectable entertainment, the awards ceremony resonated with his vision of a developed, advanced and progressive India. That’s the kind of stuff that can inspire future generations! Rajiv Gandhi encouraged bilateral cultural exchanges between India and foreign countries. This tribute echoes his passion for promoting cultural activities and giving young India a much-needed fillip. Each embodying these values in their own right, this year's winners were Times Group MD Vineet Jain (Industrialist), Bhaskar Group’s Chairperson Ramesh Chandra Agarwal (Journalism), Sam Pitroda (Global Indian), Dr Narendra Jadhav (Education), Dr G Madhavan Nair (Super Achiever), Krushnaa Patil (Woman Achiever), Avika Gor (Child Prodigy), Shahid Kapoor (Best Actor), Katrina Kaif (Best Actress), Rajashree Birla (Social Field) and Rohit Kochhar (Young Entrepreneur).

This year, too, the awardees were felicitated amidst lots of fanfare and entertainment. Shreyas Talpade and Mahima Choudhary prepared the audience for more. Esha Deol’s contemporary dance act was met with tumultuous applause; it featured the anthemic Jai Ho track performed with 50-odd children on stage. Hussain Kuwajerwala also showcased a marvellous thematic performance that addressed patriotism. Ace Bollywood hotstepper Hrithik Roshan’s act spelled out the colours of India via dance, as he trotted out moves from lazim, kalaripayattu and, of course, Bollywood. Singer and music director duo Vishal and Shekhar exhorted the audience to feel the music and feel the vibe. Raju Shrivastav was at his goofy best while Priyanka Chopra’s high-energy act reflected exactly why she is so popular! “This award ceremony is one of its kind where young talent of India salutes national achievers on such a grand scale. We strive to make the ceremony thoroughly inspiring and entertaining,” said Aarti Mattoo, event director who has been assisting Charan Singh Sapra, MLC, Maharashtra government, in putting this awards ceremony together for the past five years. Associate sponsors for this event were Indiabulls and DB Realty, co-sponsor was BHEL, while the event was produced by Momentum Group and supported by BSNL. This high-energy and high profile event will be aired tonight on Sony Enter-tainment Television at 8 pm.

Priyanka Chopra and Shahid Kapoor - are they in love? Are they dating? Have they broken off? There's so much we want to know. And the stars themselves have only stayed tight-lipped about all of it. So people, let's check out some pictures from the Rajiv Gandhi Awards ceremony, where Shahid broke off into a jiggy with Priyanka in midst of the audience. And just watch their body do all the talking! Of course I will also provide the juicier tidbits that I keep hearing about the two as you keep clicking.

So Priyanka was dancing and Shahid wanted to dance. So he broke off into a jiggy with the actress after her performance got over. A little birdie tells me the two had been sticking to each other throughout the ceremony.

Just check this out. The duo seemed not to care about anybody else. They were too much into each other. Well, now another thing I heard recently. Apparently Shahid has been checking out prices for all the big cars...

When Shahid boy asked for a price quote and all that, my friend the little birdie thought he must be buying it. But guess what Priyanka said when she heard all of this...

The sexy lady was convinced Shahid was NOT buying the car in question. WHY? Well, she believed she would be the first one to know if he did! Uhm Uhm. We believe she'd be the first one on the passenger seat as well!

What’s happening at the Rajiv Gandhi Awards

Shahid Kapur and Katrina Kaif are receiving the Rajiv Gandhi Award for Entertainment. Here is what is happening at the awards.

The awards are taking place at the National Centre for the Performing Arts, Nariman Point in South Mumbai.

Shahid is being awarded for his subtle performance in Jab We Met. Katrina is being recognized for her spate of hit films like Race, Singh is Kinng and Welcome and the fact that she is an outsider who has overcome language and cultural obstacles to establish herself in B-town. The other entertainment personality on the list of achievers in different fields is child prodigy Avika Gor of Balika Vadhu and feature film Morning Walk, who is getting an award for the same.

Shahid’s Kaminey co-star Priyanka Chopra will be showcasing her graceful dance moves to songs like Desi Girl from Dostana and Jalwa from Fashion. Esha Deol, who is a trained dancer, has been out of the limelight for a while and she will be performing at the event too. We wonder what songs she will dance to as her last hit song was Cash from the movie of the same name in 2007. The highlight performance of the event is that of Hrithik Roshan. He will be getting off his wheelchair (he is wheelchair bound preparing for Guzaarish) and back on stage after three years.

His act is titled Colours of India. The brilliant dancer will do the Lezim dance of Maharashtra and the Kathakali dance and Kalaripayattu martial art form as part of the final act. He will also dance to Bhavre from Luck By Chance and some folk songs. The perfectionist has been practicing for several hours each day preparing for his act. Hrithik’s act has been choreographed by Sanjay Shetty and designed by Carving Dreams Live. Anaita Shroff Adajania who designed his look for Dhoom 2 has worked on his look for the show too. Hrithik said, ‘It will be great to perform live on stage after three long years. I have loved every moment of learning the various folk acts. When we present it on stage, I want and hope that the viewers will feel the enthusiasm and energy of this performance as well.’

We are attending the show, and we hope to capture some memorable moments for our readers.
