A balanced mix of artistic expressions like music, dance, comedy and Bollywood featured at the 12th Rajiv Gandhi Awards ’09.

Yes, there was glamour, glory, sound and fury... but underpinning this magnificent ceremony was a certain gravitas, a sense of purpose and substance running through it all. And why substance? Well, simply because these awards keep alive the stellar values that Rajiv Gandhi embodied. In an event that blended the celebration of achievement beautifully with respectable entertainment, the awards ceremony resonated with his vision of a developed, advanced and progressive India. That’s the kind of stuff that can inspire future generations! Rajiv Gandhi encouraged bilateral cultural exchanges between India and foreign countries. This tribute echoes his passion for promoting cultural activities and giving young India a much-needed fillip. Each embodying these values in their own right, this year's winners were Times Group MD Vineet Jain (Industrialist), Bhaskar Group’s Chairperson Ramesh Chandra Agarwal (Journalism), Sam Pitroda (Global Indian), Dr Narendra Jadhav (Education), Dr G Madhavan Nair (Super Achiever), Krushnaa Patil (Woman Achiever), Avika Gor (Child Prodigy), Shahid Kapoor (Best Actor), Katrina Kaif (Best Actress), Rajashree Birla (Social Field) and Rohit Kochhar (Young Entrepreneur).

This year, too, the awardees were felicitated amidst lots of fanfare and entertainment. Shreyas Talpade and Mahima Choudhary prepared the audience for more. Esha Deol’s contemporary dance act was met with tumultuous applause; it featured the anthemic Jai Ho track performed with 50-odd children on stage. Hussain Kuwajerwala also showcased a marvellous thematic performance that addressed patriotism. Ace Bollywood hotstepper Hrithik Roshan’s act spelled out the colours of India via dance, as he trotted out moves from lazim, kalaripayattu and, of course, Bollywood. Singer and music director duo Vishal and Shekhar exhorted the audience to feel the music and feel the vibe. Raju Shrivastav was at his goofy best while Priyanka Chopra’s high-energy act reflected exactly why she is so popular! “This award ceremony is one of its kind where young talent of India salutes national achievers on such a grand scale. We strive to make the ceremony thoroughly inspiring and entertaining,” said Aarti Mattoo, event director who has been assisting Charan Singh Sapra, MLC, Maharashtra government, in putting this awards ceremony together for the past five years. Associate sponsors for this event were Indiabulls and DB Realty, co-sponsor was BHEL, while the event was produced by Momentum Group and supported by BSNL. This high-energy and high profile event will be aired tonight on Sony Enter-tainment Television at 8 pm.
