Gates of Vienna News Feed 4/8/2011Protests flared up again today in Syria. Thousands of people gathered after Friday prayers in Deraa to demonstrate against the government, and responded to tear gas by throwing stones at police. Ten people were killed, allegedly by supporters of the regime who infiltrated the protesters. The mob set the Ba’ath party offices on fire, and destroyed a statue of Bashar al-Assad’s brother.

In a new twist, Kurds in northeastern Syria also demonstrated, demanding more autonomy.

In other news, the U.S. general who was the original commander of NATO operations in Libya says that it may become necessary to insert American ground troops into the war. The rebels accuse NATO of not being zealous enough in their attacks on Col. Keddafi’s forces.
